Merens

The Mérens is a traditional mountain horse breed originating from the Pyrenees region of southern France. Historically used for farm work, transport, pack work and riding in rugged mountain terrain, the Mérens is known for its endurance, hardiness, calm temperament and surefootedness.
The breed is especially recognizable for its almost exclusively black coat, sturdy build, thick mane and tail and primitive mountain horse characteristics. Although compact in size, Mérens horses are powerful and versatile, combining draft influence with riding horse agility and stamina.
